A Moment For Big Star Bassist Andy Hummel

Radio City-era lineup: Hummel, Stephens, Chilton

Andy Hummel, original bassist for power pop legends Big Star, passed away yesterday after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 59.

Hummel provided bass for the band's first two albums, the highly influential #1 Record and Radio City, as well as writing and co-writing several songs on both albums including "Back of a Car" and "Way Out West." Shortly before the release of Radio City, he departed the band to finish college. With the loss of Hummel, drummer Jody Stephens is the sole member of Big Star's original lineup which also included guitarist/vocalist Chris Bell (who passed away in 1978) and vocalist/guitarist Alex Chilton (who passed away in March).

Here is an interview with Hummel from 2001. Also, here is an article on the recording the classic Big Star song, "September Gurls." Hightower and Jones wishes to send condolences to Hummel's family and friends.
