Seriously, we live in a very sick and twisted world when there are plans for a religious protest outside of a Foo Fighters concert. Foo Fighters? Granted, their name backwards spells Satan and two of their biggest singles ("Big Me" and "Best of You") are about demonic possession but, clearly, there is no need for a religious protest. Apparently, according to one man and his church, there is and before this band continues to doom us all into a black hole of drugs, gambling and prostitution or, as I like to look at it, the apocalyptic version of Hill Valley in Back to the Future Part II.
As reported on Spinner and NME, Westboro Baptist Church are planning to protest outside of Foo Fighters' September 16 concert in Kansas City, MO. Here is a couple of brief excerpts from Church leader Fred Phelps kind words on the church's website in regards to their protest:
"The entertainment industry is a microcosm of the people of this doomed nation: hard-hearted, Hell-bound, and hedonistic to the max. Every person with a platform should be using it to encourage obedience to God; instead, you teach all things contrary to Him: fornication, adultery, idols, fags."
"You have no proper thoughts of the God that created you, but we’ll be there to make sure you don’t forget when you haul your rebellious carcasses into the Sprint Center to watch God-hating fools do their shtick. The day of your destruction is upon you, even as you vainly seek comfort in the frivolities of this life."
For obvious (the church's ridiculous hatefulness) and personal (my need to embrace rock and and all of which it stands for) reasons, I refuse to post a link to the church's website where you can read the entire message. Also, there is the issue of the website's address, which from the first part of his commentary above, you can guess where that is disgustingly going. Instead, click on the Wikipedia entry above, grab some popcorn and be horrified at something more offensive than Soul Man (does anybody even remember that film).
Okay...deep breath....back to comedic journalism mode.
Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church's recent decision to protest the Foo Fighters concert could stem from the band's recent, and very hilarious, promo video for the pending Fall tour. The video features members of the band showering together at a truck stop and shots of their naked butts except for Pat Smear, whose part does not involve nudity but is just as funny. Watch the video for yourself and see it if humor and awesome music are worth protesting.
As for Phelps and his church, lighten up. The world is far too complicated and there are enough evils out there that vastly out-rival any ills that Foo Fighters could possibly come up with. So relax and fight the real musical evils in the world like Kidz Bop compilations and Kim Kardashian videos. Seriously, this is not Footloose and there is not a town threatened by dancing so I am pretty certain that we are not going to hell, especially on a Friday night. Maybe on a Saturday night because that is an alright night for fighting and then all hell breaks loose as Elton John beats you with pool cue in a bar.
