R.I.P. The White Stripes (1997-2011)

What can be best called as an era where a minimalist approach to blues met Detroit's late 60's/early 70's punk sound, the White Stripes announced their retirement this morning. Without citing any specific reasons behind the breakup, the official press statement noted that it was not due to health concerns, artistic differences or even a lack of interest. Nevertheless, over 13 years, seven albums (six studio, one live) and countless 7" later, the White Stripes have left behind a very impressive catalog that undoubtedly left a indefinite mark on the shape and sound of music over the last 10 years and for years to come. Below is the official statement posted on the band's website and the last televised clip of the band as performed "We're Going to Be Friends" on the last episode of Late Night With Conan O'Brien as well as a few other clips. Thank you, Meg and Jack White for the tunes and performances that will last a lifetime.

Nico. Milla. Now There's Karen...Elson!

Yes, there is a new contender to the model/singer throne previously held in the 70's by Nico and the 90's by Milla (yes, as in Milla Jovovich of Resident Evil and The Fifth Element). She is Karen Elson and is also the wife of Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather), who is producing her debut album, The Ghost Who Walks. Before one cries foul at either the model/singer aspect or the fact that Jack White is putting out his wife's album, I suggest you check out her first single, the album's title track, which is really good. In fact, if the album is as enjoyable as the first single, I would say that Nico and Milla could have strong competition in the world of models turned singers. Points off, however, for using your full name instead of just calling yourself Karen.
