I have the faintest clue on what is going on in the water of Atlanta but whatever it is, the summer is hot and I want a drink. A couple of months ago, Janelle Monae released an amazing album (The Archandroid) that should already be in your collection and Adult Swim started a free downloadable singles club. July, however, is far from shabby thanks to new releases from Big Boi and Black Lips. Also, Cee-Lo Green covers Band of Horses and The Coathangers are in a contest of sorts.
As mentioned here a couple of days ago, Outkast's Big Boi has an amazing solo album, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, in stores next Tuesday. While you are waiting for its release, Big Boi has released Mixtape for Dummies: Guide to Global Greatness, a compilation of various songs featuring Big Boi from Outkast to solo material to various guest spots with other artists. Download Mixtape for Dummies: Guide to Global Greatness at Big Boi's site and remember to pickup Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty on July 6.
Also being released on July 6 is the new 7" from Black Lips. The new single is a split with Pierced Arrows and is part of the Scion A/V Garage Series. Their contribution to the series is called "The Best Napkin I Ever Had" while Pierced Arrows contribute "The Doorway" and both songs help make this an awesome 7" to add to your collection. Pick up the Black Lips/Pireced Arrows Scion A/V Garage 7" while you can as pressings are limited.
In early June, Cee-Lo Green released Georgia, the first single from his forthcoming album, Cee-Lo Green is the Lady Killer. Now, the Goodie Mob/Gnarls Barkley vocalist has released a video for his cover of Band of Horses' No One's Gonna Love You. The cover is a slice of soulful, electronic heaven for a song that was already great to begin with. The video is NSFW due to various shots of nudity so until you can watch it, just press play and open a tab for a another page in your browser.
Finally, H & J favorites (and second interviewees), The Coathangers are in a contest of sorts. Energy drink Sparks is offering free MP3 downloads on their site with codes found in specially marked cans. The Coathangers' offering is "Toomerhead" from their sophomore release, Scramble. So, buy some cans and each person give the song one download a day (as your legally only able to do one a day) and help them win. The winner receives a special prize and why not help out an awesome band like The Coathangers. Download the song here and the contest ends on August 31.
