New Scion A/V Split, Enslaved EP And A Mixtape From La Baticueeva

The best part about writing this blog is the free music and the only thing better than that is presenting it to you. These free selections include a new split from Scion A/V, a new EP from Enslaved, a Daytrotter session and a mixtape made by a friend/best radio hostess I know. With music this excellent and free, bad internet connections and a lack of computer is hardly a reason not to download this material.

New Garage Explosion Screening Tonight

Fact: The garage sound of bands like ? and the Mysterians, The Kingsmen and, later on, The Stooges is alive and well in 2011. Bands like Black Lips, The Coathangers, Black Keys and The Dirtbombs have kept the scene going through their lo-fi, enjoyably creative 7" and full-length albums. The current garage scenes of Memphis and Detroit are featured in a film entitled New Garage Explosion: In Love with These Times.

Free Magrudergrind Show This Saturday

Free? Metal Matinee? Saturday afternoon? The only way this could be any better is if you were actually there. This Saturday, Scion A/V is offering a free concert headlined by D.C. grindcore trio, Magrudergrind, at Reggie's Rock Club. The trio recently released a new EP, Crusher, that not only showcases the band's technical skill but also steamrolls over its 12 minute running time. With their headlining spot at this Saturday's Metal Matinee, you can expect the same sonic ferocity in person in addition to selections from their impressive back catalog. Get your spot for the Scion A/V Metal Matinee by submitting your RVSP here. Mind Eraser and Noisear are set to open. Also, if you have not had the chance to listen to the new Magrudergrind EP, Crusher, yet, crank up your speakers and hit play after the jump.

Music Geeks, Free Scion A/V Download, Erykah Badu's Probation & Contests

Spinner made a list of the top 20 music geeks in cinema. The list ranges from the likes of the Gwar-obsessed, record clerk stoner Mark from Empire Records to cult duo of Video Aces' Josh Tager and Ivan Alexeev from one of my favorite films, Tapeheads. Bonus points go to writer Jason Persse for including American Psycho's Patrick Bateman's obsession with Huey Lewis and the News as well as Christian Slater's performance as Happy Harry Hard-on in Pump Up the Volume. The 20 cinematic geeks and their love for music can be found here.

The Sounds of Atlanta With Big Boi, Black Lips, Cee-Lo Green and The Coathangers

I have the faintest clue on what is going on in the water of Atlanta but whatever it is, the summer is hot and I want a drink. A couple of months ago, Janelle Monae released an amazing album (The Archandroid) that should already be in your collection and Adult Swim started a free downloadable singles club. July, however, is far from shabby thanks to new releases from Big Boi and Black Lips. Also, Cee-Lo Green covers Band of Horses and The Coathangers are in a contest of sorts.
